How to Obtain Idaho Vital Records

Idaho, like other states, maintains extensive files of birth, death, stillbirth, marriage, and divorce statistics. These statistics, or vital records, serve a variety of administrative and legal purposes and are requested by people for a number of reasons. Sometimes people need copies of vital records for identification, school enrollment, insurance benefits, employment, genealogy research, or other reasons. If you need a copy of Idaho vital records, here is some basic information about the records and how to obtain them.

        • In Idaho, vital records have been kept for many years and managed at the state level in Boise. Birth and death certificates are on file dating back to July 1911, and marriage and divorce records date to May 1947. Some counties maintain records as well, but these are generally older certificates and are limited to events that actually took place in the county.
        • Idaho vital records are considered confidential until a certain point in time. After 100 years, birth certificates are made available to the general public, and death, stillbirth, marriage, and divorce certificates become public record after 50 years. For individuals requesting certificates that are within these time frames, proof of eligibility must be provided. Only certain individuals can receive copies of vital records, including the individuals themselves, immediate family members, and legal representatives.
        • Requests for Idaho vital records can be made in one of three ways: by mail or through an outside ordering system that accepts online and faxed orders. To request a certified copy of a vital record, the requestor must fill out an application, provide information about his or herself, and supply accurate information about the individual(s) and circumstances on the certificate. A photocopy of a valid government-issued picture ID (driver’s license, passport, state ID card, tribal ID card, prison ID, or concealed weapons permit) must be submitted as well. Online and faxed orders will require the same information.
        • Specific information that is required when making the request is the type of certificate that is being requested, the full name of the individual(s) listed on the certificate, the date and location of the event, the mother and father’s names (birth certificate only), the requestor’s relationship to the individual on the certificate, and the reason for the request. The requestor must also provide his or her personal information, including full name, address, phone number, and signature.
        • Certified copies of vital records are $13.00, with the exception of a death certificate, which is $14.00. Online and faxed orders will be assessed an additional $10.50 credit card processing fee. Check and money orders are acceptable forms of payment for mail requests; a credit card is required for an online order.
        • Mail request take 5-7 business days to process, while online or faxed orders will be processed within 2 business days. Express service will enable you to receive your records faster and costs an additional $19.00.

If you need Idaho vital records for any reason, use the above information to help you in your search.
